Who We Are
Starkman & Zhang Lawyers is a litigation boutique based in Markham, Ontario, acting for businesses and individuals across the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario in commercial, construction, real estate, shareholder, landlord-tenant and cross-border disputes. We are trial lawyers: the firm does not handle transactional or solicitor work, and every file is run by people who appear in court.
Founding partner Paul H. Starkman brings more than thirty years of trial and appellate advocacy before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court and Court of Appeal. Partner Calvin Zhang runs trial and appellate matters in his own right — including as counsel of record in Wei v. Ye-Hang Canada, 2026 ONCA 180 — and leads the firm’s China-Canada cross-border practice in Mandarin. They are supported by a team of associate lawyers, articling students, law clerks and licensed paralegals working in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
Our Name
In English we practise as Starkman & Zhang Lawyers — the names of our founding partners. In Chinese the firm carries the trade name 达张律师事务所: 达 (dá) is the character of results — 使命必达, seeing a mandate through — and 张 (zhāng) is both partner Calvin Zhang’s family name and the character in 伸张正义, upholding justice. The China-Canada Practice
A defining strength of the firm is disputes that cross the Pacific: enforcing Chinese judgments and CIETAC arbitral awards in Ontario — including the leading recent enforcement in China Yantai v.
