Bio

Julie Zhu is a licensed paralegal with more than 20 years of legal experience across China and Canada. Her professional background is distinguished by first-hand experience within judicial systems on two continents, combined with extensive practical involvement in civil litigation procedure and court practice in Ontario.

Julie supports litigation counsel in civil and commercial matters by assisting with pleadings, motion materials, affidavits, court filings, and procedural compliance. Her work is grounded in a deep understanding of how cases move through the court system from commencement to resolution, and how procedural decisions affect litigation outcomes.

Having served as a judge in China and later worked within court administration in Ontario, Julie brings a dual institutional perspective to litigation support. She understands disputes not only from the advocate’s standpoint, but also from the perspective of the court itself—how records are reviewed, how evidence is assessed, and how procedural rules are applied in practice.

Julie is valued for her precision, reliability, and calm management of complex litigation files. Her experience allows her to anticipate procedural issues, manage deadlines effectively, and support litigation strategies with careful attention to detail.

Role in Litigation Matters

Julie works closely with litigation counsel to support civil and commercial litigation matters at all stages. Her responsibilities include preparing and organizing pleadings, motion records, affidavits, and other court materials; managing filing deadlines; and ensuring compliance with applicable procedural rules.

Her deep procedural knowledge allows her to identify potential issues early, streamline litigation processes, and assist counsel in presenting clear, organized, and procedurally sound records to the court.

Judicial Background

Julie began her legal career in China, where she served for 14 years within the Chinese justice system, including as a presiding judge in both Family Court and Civil Court. In this capacity, she adjudicated a wide range of disputes, managed court proceedings, assessed evidence, and issued judicial decisions.

Her experience on the bench provided her with a deep understanding of how courts evaluate credibility, weigh evidence, and apply procedural rules—insight that continues to inform her work in litigation support today.

Ontario Court Experience

After transitioning her practice to Canada, Julie built extensive experience working within the Ontario court system. From 2008 to 2013, she worked at the Toronto Small Claims Court, gaining hands-on experience with court administration, filings, scheduling, and procedural compliance.

This role provided her with detailed familiarity with the internal operations of Ontario courts and reinforced her practical understanding of how matters progress through the system from filing to resolution.

Private Practice

Since 2014, Julie has been in private practice at Iconic Legal Services, where she has worked as a Licensed Paralegal for over a decade. Her practice focuses on litigation procedure, document preparation, court filings, and case management across a wide range of civil matters.

Her work is characterized by efficiency, accuracy, and a strong command of procedural requirements. She is trusted by clients and counsel alike for her professionalism, discretion, and reliability.

Dual Legal Perspective

One of Julie’s defining strengths is her dual legal perspective. Having served as a judge and later worked within court administration, she understands disputes not only from the advocate’s point of view, but also from the perspective of the decision-maker and the institution.

This allows her to anticipate how materials may be received by the court and to support litigation teams in presenting records that are clear, organized, and procedurally sound.

Language and Client Support

Julie works seamlessly with Chinese-speaking clients, particularly those unfamiliar with the Canadian legal system. She is able to explain legal procedures clearly, bridge cultural and procedural expectations, and facilitate communication between clients and counsel.

This capability is especially valuable in matters involving international parties or individuals navigating litigation in Canada for the first time.

Professional Philosophy

Throughout her career, Julie has maintained a strong commitment to professionalism, discretion, and diligence. She approaches each file with care, recognizing that effective litigation support requires not only technical knowledge, but also practical judgment and respect for the administration of justice.

Her background—combining judicial experience, court administration, and private practice—reflects a broader philosophy that fairness, procedure, and careful analysis are central to the legal process across all jurisdictions.
