Patrick Yip

Patrick Yip is a lawyer practicing in association with Starkman & Zhang Lawyers. His practice focuses on civil litigation, commercial and business matters, real estate, wills, and related advisory work. Patrick brings a multidisciplinary professional background that combines formal legal training across multiple common law jurisdictions with strong advocacy, research, and client-focused communication skills.

Patrick regularly assists on contested civil and commercial matters, including motion practice, drafting of pleadings and motion records, legal research, and preparing matters for court. He is known for clear written advocacy, disciplined analysis, and professional client communication.

Patrick’s legal education spans three common law jurisdictions. He began his legal studies in the United Kingdom at Manchester Metropolitan University, earning both a Graduate Diploma in Law and an LL.B. He subsequently pursued Canadian common law training at Osgoode Hall Law School and completed a Global Professional LL.M. in Innovation, Law & Technology at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law.

Patrick obtained his Certificate of Qualification from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) in 2024. This multi-jurisdictional training informs his approach to common-law problems and gives him comfort working across both transactional and disputes contexts.

Patrick has also completed practical advocacy training through trial advocacy workshops.

Prior to joining Starkman & Zhang Lawyers, Patrick gained hands-on experience working under the supervision of practising lawyers on commercial and corporate files. His drafting experience includes:

He has managed files across civil litigation, real estate, family law, immigration, and commercial law matters, and is comfortable moving between contested and non-contested work.

Patrick’s professional experience includes working as a financial advisor at Scotiabank, where he advised clients on financial planning, mortgage structuring, and estate-related considerations. This experience gives him a practical understanding of retail financial products and the decisions clients face on mortgages, refinancings, and estate arrangements.

Earlier in his career, Patrick worked as a financial journalist and reporter in Hong Kong. This experience strengthened his investigative skills, legal-adjacent writing ability, and capacity to communicate complex issues clearly under tight deadlines.
