Ho Ming (Wallace) Chan

Ho Ming (Wallace) Chan is a detail-oriented, results-driven legal professional with four years of legal experience in Hong Kong, including a year and a half of post-qualification experience as a solicitor. Admitted a solicitor of the High Court of the Hong Kong SAR in November 2022, he handled a wide range of contentious matters — internet fraud, personal injury, commercial contracts, recovery of possession, and other general civil and criminal cases.

As a solicitor at Cheung, Chan & Chung, Wallace reported directly to the firm’s partner on civil and criminal files. He acted for a reputable Hong Kong church to recover possession against multiple trespassers, assisted a subcontractor in recovering unpaid sums from the main contractor on a residential development project (supporting the barrister at trial), and helped several legally-aided clients reach out-of-court child arrangement settlements in divorce proceedings. He attended interlocutory hearings on behalf of clients, including case management summonses, case settlement conferences, and time extension summonses.

In earlier roles as a trainee solicitor and paralegal, Wallace assisted on construction disputes involving wrongful repudiation of subcontracts and project delays, criminal defence matters, a commercial claim to recover professional fees from a well-known catering group, a personal injury claim arising from a traffic accident (preparing affirmations, witness statements, and statements of damages, and advising the client in mediation), and cross-border internet fraud cases acting for both plaintiffs and defendants to recover or defend funds.

Wallace relocated from Hong Kong to Canada in July 2024. He completed all National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) requirements — earning his Certificate of Qualification in April 2026 — and is currently enrolled as a licensing candidate with the Law Society of Ontario.

Before joining Starkman & Zhang, he worked as a legal assistant at a Canadian law firm, where he prepared and drafted real estate closing documents and probate applications, assisted in the preparation and execution of wills, and maintained organized legal filing systems. This gave him early exposure to Ontario conveyancing and estates practice alongside his litigation background.

Wallace also spent two years in client-facing customer due diligence roles in the banking industry. At HSBC (Business Banking — De-Risking), he progressed from KYC Officer to KYC Assistant Manager, interviewing business banking customers, completing periodic and alert-driven due diligence reviews, verifying documentation, and identifying suspicious financial activity and transaction patterns from risk surveillance reports. Earlier, as a compliance specialist at Capco, he conducted customer due diligence reviews for a top-tier global bank.

This experience gives him a practical understanding of anti-money-laundering frameworks, financial-crime red flags, and documentary verification — a useful perspective in fraud recovery, asset-tracing, and cross-border commercial disputes.

Having trained and practised as a solicitor in Hong Kong — a common law jurisdiction — before relocating to Canada, Wallace brings a cross-jurisdictional perspective well suited to matters involving Hong Kong and Chinese parties, cross-border contracts, and international clients.

He is a native Cantonese speaker and fluent in English and Mandarin, enabling him to work directly with Cantonese- and Mandarin-speaking clients and review Chinese-language documents without reliance on third-party translation.

Wallace combines hands-on common law litigation experience, an accredited legal education, and a compliance-trained eye for detail. He brings a disciplined, client-focused approach to supporting litigation teams on complex civil, commercial, and cross-border matters.
