Professional Background

Yikai Wang was called to the Ontario bar as a Barrister and Solicitor in July 2026 after completing the Law Practice Program at Toronto Metropolitan University. She holds an LL.M. in Canadian Common Law from Osgoode Hall Law School and a Juris Master from Shanghai International Studies University, giving her formal legal training in both the Canadian and Chinese legal systems.

As a student at law with the Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic in Toronto, Yikai conducted legal research on immigration matters (including criminal inadmissibility), residential tenancy, and social assistance law, and reviewed client records and supporting evidence for humanitarian and compassionate applications. She managed filings on the Supreme Court of Canada’s portal for the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice and the clinic as interveners in English Montreal School Board v. Attorney General of Quebec, and conducted intake and pre-assessment interviews with low-income clients across social assistance, immigration, housing, and wills & estates matters. She also developed Mandarin legal glossaries and internal working documents to support clinic staff.

Litigation and Advocacy Training

Through the Law Practice Program’s simulated law firm, Yikai worked files across civil, administrative, immigration, employment, and criminal law. She prepared a refugee claimant for proceedings before the Immigration and Refugee Board — including evidence review and drafting the Basis of Claim — and delivered an oral submission before the Board in support of the claim. She prepared clients for examinations for discovery in a personal injury matter, assembled materials for a bail hearing and assisted with Crown negotiations, and drafted share purchase agreements and a statutorily compliant employment agreement.

Earlier, as a legal intern with General Motors Investment Co. in Shanghai, she drafted and reviewed corporate contracts, researched the regulatory framework governing foreign-invested enterprises in China, and assisted in-house counsel with compliance reviews — experience that informs her work on cross-border commercial matters.

Insurance Industry Background

Before entering practice, Yikai spent two years as a Registered Insurance Broker of Ontario (Property & Casualty, licensed 2023) with AIA Insurance Brokers in Vaughan. She analyzed client risk profiles, prepared and proofread policy applications for binding, and coordinated between underwriting, claims, and billing departments across Ontario. This first-hand understanding of how insurers assess risk, document coverage, and process claims is a practical asset in insurance-related disputes and coverage-adjacent litigation.

Bilingual and Cross-Border Capability

Fluent in Mandarin and English, and trained in both Chinese and Canadian law, Yikai works directly with Mandarin-speaking clients and reviews Chinese-language documents without third-party translation. Her clinic experience serving Toronto’s Chinese community gives her a grounded understanding of the practical barriers Chinese-speaking clients face in the Ontario justice system.
