Professional Background
Laya Zhu brings more than ten years of litigation and advisory experience from Mainland China to her articling role in Canada. She has independently handled complex civil and commercial disputes, including partnership conflicts and high-value commercial claims exceeding USD $500,000.
Her practice experience in China included conducting client interviews and case assessments, managing evidence collection and documentary review, negotiating with opposing counsel and counterparties, appearing before judges in civil proceedings, and advising corporate and private equity clients.
In addition to contentious litigation work, Laya advised private equity funds and assisted clients in capital raises exceeding USD $10 million. She also provided compliance training and regulatory guidance to corporate clients, strengthening her understanding of governance and institutional risk management.
This background gives her strong practical insight into commercial dispute dynamics, procedural management, and client strategy in complex matters.
Canadian Legal Education
Laya completed her LL.M. in Canadian Common Law at Osgoode Hall Law School in 2024, where she achieved strong academic standing and received excellent faculty references.
Her academic focus included Canadian Constitutional Law, Tort Law, Judicial Review, and the Structure of the Canadian Legal System. She is currently progressing through the Canadian qualification process.
Civil Law Education in China
Before pursuing Canadian accreditation, Laya completed an LL.M. in Civil Law at Fudan University and a Bachelor of Laws at East China University of Political Science and Law. She obtained her Lawyer’s License in the People’s Republic of China in 2013.
Her civil law background provides a strong comparative-law perspective, particularly in matters involving cross-border transactions, Chinese legal documentation, or disputes with international dimensions.
Current Responsibilities
At Starkman & Zhang, Laya’s responsibilities include drafting legal memoranda and pleadings, preparing case summaries and factual chronologies, assisting with file management and procedural coordination, and supporting litigation strategy development.
She approaches each file with analytical discipline, attention to detail, and a methodical working style, ensuring that materials prepared for counsel are accurate, structured, and strategically aligned.
Cross-Border Perspective and Language Capability
A defining feature of Laya’s profile is her cross-jurisdictional legal background. Having practised in China for over a decade and subsequently completed advanced Canadian legal education, she offers valuable comparative insight in matters involving Chinese commercial entities, cross-border contractual disputes, foreign-language documentation, and international clients.
Laya is fluent in Mandarin and English, enabling her to communicate directly with Chinese-speaking clients and review Chinese-language legal materials without reliance on third-party translation. This capability enhances efficiency and reduces interpretive risk in cross-border matters.
